Art from Solitary: Jorge Garcia

” I added color to show the darkness and despair in here and how a letter and/or music can bridge this and bring some life and hope to prisoners.”

  1. I did 20 yrs in prison, with 10 of those yrs being warehouses on the Eastham Unit…
And this artwork depicts perfectly the importance of letters, music, and just a basic connection with humanity. Prison is FULL of people who live extremely close, and yet, it’s one of the loneliest places on earth.

  2. Beautiful art. It amazes me the lack of compassion that family and friends show toward their loved ones who are locked up and shunned by society. Instead of standing by them, they reject them because of the mistakes they made. The way I look at it is that each and every one of us can end up in their situation. I try to put myself in my son’s shoes. I would not want to be treated like this. A letter is such a small thing but it means a connection to the world that is more important than anything else for someone who has lost that connection. Blessings to all!
